Developing Point 1

Teaching Children how to Cope

When my son, Josh, was 18 months old; he was diagnosed with Global Development Delays.  I received guidelines from speech therapists, occupational therapists,  physical therapists and doctors outlining the proper development  of language skills, fine motor skills, gross motor skills, and overall physical development. However, the only thing I received concerning mental health was in terms of signs/symptoms to look for concerning Autism and later ADHD. There was nothing outlining social/emotional development or the development of mentally healthy kids like the other areas of development.

So, I made my own.  Using the developmental guidelines I had received for Josh as a template to create point 1.

Additionally, Josh has been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, and Oppositional Defiance; as his mother I have been given "tools" from every therapist, doctor, teacher, and stranger teaching him to cope with life and advice for teaching him.

Needless to say not all was beneficial. However, I learned the importance of tweaking and making it work and the pure uselessness of some of it.  I incorporated what I had been given and learned as Josh's mother with additional research resulting in the outcome available on this site.
