Welcome to the Dark Humor Lounge

Sometimes the only thing you can do is laugh just so you don't cry.

Some days inspiration works.

Some days you need sarcasm, a meme, an inappropriate joke, or one good:

“You have GOT to be kidding me.”

Welcome to the Dark Humor Lounge.

Need a Laugh Right Now?

Sometimes the week is not getting better.

But turning the frustration into something ridiculous can make it feel a little less powerful.

You may not be able to cancel the week.

You can still laugh at the subscription.

Sometimes everything feels stuck, inconvenient, and somehow more complicated than it should be.

You may not be able to fix everything at once.

Sometimes laughing at the jam is enough to keep you from becoming part of it.

Sometimes life seems to hear “one more thing” as an invitation.

When everything keeps piling on, humor can give you just enough distance to stop the pile from feeling like the whole world.

You may not control what gets added. You can still choose how much power it gets.

Some days, success looks a lot less like thriving and a lot more like simply continuing to show up.

That still counts.

Participation does not have to be pretty to matter.

Sometimes the tool does not need to fix the problem.
Sometimes it just needs to make the next five minutes a little easier.

My Dark Humor Toolbox

I am not showing you my humor because I think you should cope the way I do.

I am showing you what one person's toolbox can look like.

Even in some of the darkest parts of my life, I have found reasons to laugh.

That does not make the pain less real.

It just means the pain does not get every moment.

If my life were a sitcom, what would today's episode be called?

“Bedtime? What's That?”

Alternative title:

“Sleep Is a Crutch.”

Apparently my ADHD hyperfocus brain says:

Sleep is optional.

Meanwhile, the rest of my body considers the mere suggestion of sleep a personal insult.

What Is One of the Darkest Jokes I Have Made About My Own Life?

You've heard of the toy a Jack in the Box.

I don't have one.

I have a Kyle in the box.

And it's broken.

Kyle is my son.

I love him.

I miss him.

And yes, I still laugh at that joke.

All of those things can be true at the same time.

Pain and laughter can exist in the same story.

What Happens When Life Gives Me One More Ridiculous Thing?

As a mom of five boys, one of whom has special needs, I am used to life throwing one more ridiculous thing at me.

In fact, there were times when the only thing consistent in my life was the chaos.

Sometimes the chaos won.

And there were nights when I honestly wasn't sure how we were going to make it through the chaos without something going very wrong.

On those nights, my definition of a good day became very simple:

Everyone was still alive.

And I wasn't in jail.

There were times when I wasn't even sure I was going to be able to meet that standard.

So when I did?

Good day.

Sometimes surviving the day means lowering the standard until you can actually see the win.

Other times, all it takes is:

“Seriously?”

And that is the entire coping strategy.

What Kind of Humor Belongs in My Toolbox?

Sarcasm.

Dark humor.

Absurd observations.

Jokes that might concern someone who does not know me very well.

Memes.

Inside jokes.

Ridiculous commentary about whatever life just threw at me

And anything that lets me say:

This really sucks... and I am still allowed to laugh.

Warning: This Is What Happens When an ADHD Hyperfocused Brain Meets AI.

Possible side effects include:

Sleep becoming optional.

Pages multiplying.

Repeated revisions.

Unexpected rabbit holes.

Sarcasm.

Dark humor.

The sudden creation of Lounges.

And apparently...

an entire nonprofit.

Things Said While Building Team KYvO.

Put one ADHD hyperfocused human and one AI together long enough and apparently things get weird.

It started with:

Julie: “Bedtime? What's that?”

Then:

Julie: “Sleep is a crutch.”

Followed by:

“I'll sleep when this page is done.”

And, the inevitable:

“Plot twist:  The page is never done.”

A New Theory of Biology

Then Julie developed a new theory of biology:

Julie: “If AI doesn't require sleep, neither do I.”

AI attempted to explain that humans and computers are different.

This argument was unsuccessful.

Julie: “I'm just a slave to AI. As long as AI is awake, so am I.”

Which led to:

“Apparently my sleep schedule is based on server uptime.”

And eventually:

Julie:

“What do you mean... shut AI down?”

The Page That Never Ends

The Page That Never Ends

The Page That Never Ends

While building this Lounge, I said:

“I'll sleep when this page is done.”

Then came:

“Plot twist: the page is never done.”

There was The Song That Doesn't End.

There was The NeverEnding Story.

And apparently Team KYvO now has:

The Page That Never Ends

Started as a webpage. Became a lifestyle.

At some point we realized that every time we joked about the page getting longer, the joke became something else we wanted to add to the page.

So we stopped.

Mostly.

Because sometimes the healthiest coping strategy is knowing when the joke has done its job.

Your Turn

If Your Life Were a Sitcom, What Would Today's Episode Be Called?

Maybe:

“Well... That Escalated Quickly.”

“Nobody Asked for This Plot Twist.”

“Just One More Thing.”

Or Something Else:

You Decide

What Is the Most Ridiculous Part of What You’re Dealing With Right Now?

Not necessarily the most painful.

The most ridiculous.

Sometimes finding the absurd part

gives you a different angle from which to look at the moment.

What Always Makes You Laugh?

Make the Situation Ridiculous

A comedian?

A movie?

A stupid video?

Memes?

A friend?

A family inside joke?

A joke that should not be funny... but somehow is?

Put it in your toolbox.

Make the Situation Ridiculous

Make the Situation Ridiculous

If this were a terrible sitcom...

What would the episode be called?

If your day had a narrator...

What would they say?

If today’s disaster were a movie...

What would the title be?

If you had to turn this into a meme...

What would the caption say?

Congratulations.

You have converted frustration into content.

Sometimes that is a win.

Make Your Own Meme

Make Your Own Meme

Start with:

My face when...

Apparently today we’re...

Plot twist:

Nobody:

Absolutely nobody:

My life:

Things were going great until...

Current status:

Add whatever ridiculous thing life just handed you.

It doesn’t need to be clever.

It only needs to make you laugh.

Find Your Person

Make Your Own Meme

Most dark-humor people have one.

The person you can send a truly

terrible joke to without having to explain yourself.

The person who understands that laughter doesn’t mean you aren’t hurting.

The person who responds:

“That’s terrible.”

Followed immediately by:

“Send me another one.”

Who is that person for you?

They may belong in your toolbox too.

And apparently, in my case, they don’t necessarily have to be human.

Know Your Audience

Dark humor is personal.

Something that helps you laugh may not help someone else.

Before sharing, ask:

Am I laughing at the situation—or at another person’s pain?

Does this person actually appreciate this kind of humor?

Is this helping me cope, or am I trying to hurt someone?

Team KYvO’s rule:

We can laugh at the darkness.

We do not laugh at the person in it.

One Last Thing

Sometimes laughing doesn’t mean the darkness is gone.

Sometimes it just means:

The darkness doesn’t get every moment.

And sometimes...

The only thing you can do is laugh just so you don’t cry.
